Bob serves as Executive Director of Innovate Birmingham. He has been a venture capitalist with a strong success record for the last decade. He has the independence to select opportunities that will allow him to have more operational involvement with high growth, venture backed companies. Bob has been a leader and partner in Alabama in moving Technology-Based Economic Development forward for several years. He is pleased to return to his operational roots, and leverage his experience as an institutional venture capitalist to create sustainable value through Innovate Birmingham.
He is a member of the board of directors for Shipt, CareSync, Axial Exchange, Healthcare Interactive, the Southeast Medical Device Association, the Florida Venture Forum, the Innovation Depot in Birmingham, AL, and the Atlanta Venture Forum. Bob also serves as a member of the Investment Advisory Board for the Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. He is a Venture Fellow at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, a member of the Advisory Board for the STEM Path to MBA at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and is a Visiting Executive at Auburn University.
Bob was a Partner with Harbert Management Corporation (HMC) for the last nine years. He served as senior vice president/general manager of the Pharmacy Services Division at U.S. Oncology, a privately held, vertically integrated cancer care provider network. Bob was also a senior executive at Cardinal Health, where he served as vice president of new ventures. In 1994, Bob founded Surgical Innovations and Services, Inc. (SIS), a surgical laser management company. Under his leadership, SIS became a leader in the emerging outsource management sector. In 2000, SIS merged with Surgical Laser Technologies, Inc. (SLTI). Bob continued as president of SIS and served as vice president of sales, marketing and business development for SLTI, until he exited the company following its acquisition by publicly-traded Photomedex, Inc.
Bob is a graduate of the University of Georgia and holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Chemistry.
